Purpose:
To use poetry as a launchpad to lead students to think
deeply about poetry before class discussion
Objective(s) of the
practice:
To think critically about poetry
To write well about poetry
Description:
I have assigned students to read a number of poems from
a contemporary poet. As they read deeply and carefully
annotate the poems, I also ask them to arrive at a succinct
formulation of their ideas and send these to the rest
of the class. They read each other's ideas and come
to class better prepared for discussion. Each student
tries to find a few keywords or phrases that best encapsulate
what is characteristic about the poet we are studying.
I then compile all of these entries on a one-page sheet,
grouping similar ideas together, and distribute it at
the beginning of class.
How did this practice enhance your class?:
This practice measurably enriched the classroom discussion
because they had already thought critically about the
material and had come to individual formulations of
ideas.
Suggestions for variations/adaptation/follow-up:
Create a web page with poet's bio, photo, and the best
of the keywords and phrases.
